SURJ3A Action Alerts keep you in the loop!
We get it — things can feel overwhelming, and it’s hard to know where to plug in. Our advice? Try something.
At SURJ3A, there’s a place for everyone. Whether you’re coordinating educational events, supporting our accountability partners, showing up at the MD Legislative session, or joining local actions, you’ll find like-minded people and a political home.
Commitment can ebb and flow, and that’s okay. Explore the options below to find your fit, understand what each role requires, and choose your group.
Attend an upcoming SURJ3A Power Hour+ or email us surjannapolis@gmail.com if you are interested in joining a SURJ3A team and getting into ACTION!
During the annual Maryland Legislative Session (January-April), we work with Accountability partners to advocate for legislation that advances racial justice. No experience is necessary; anybody can do this. We offer training at the beginning of each legislative session.
We have also shown up with our voices and actions for (or against!) Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis legislation. If you are interested, we want to hear from you!
Commitment during the MD Legislative session can include attending accountability and local partners legislative training, keeping track of bills, writing testimonials, recommending and/or co-organzing actions such as petitions, rallies and/or meetings with elected officials. Potentially 1-5 hours/week - you decide!
SURJ3A has participated in many actions over the years with our accountability partners and has also worked to engage more white people in the multiracial movement for justice. We continue these efforts and have also formed local "circles" so people can easily plug in to the community. Join a Noncooperation or Election Circle today!
The group decides how often to meet, their capacity for planning and participating in actions. Commitment can be anywhere from 1-5 hours/month.
NEW: Circles in Annapolis, West County, Bowie and Calvert County
Over the years, we’ve built powerful relationships with Black- and Brown-led organizations and the people in them. We serve on partner committees, show up for actions, and sometimes provide mutual aid in solidarity.
Currently, our partners are: Anne Arundel NAACP, the Coalition for Atonement & Repair (CAR), People Builders Consulting, and CASA de Maryland.
We support our partners by contributing time, talent, testimony, and tithing to their organizations, and we are interested in hearing from you if you have 2-5 hours/month or donations to support these organizations.
Our Basebuilding team focuses on growing, engaging, and sustaining SURJ3A’s membership.
Sometimes we do this by developing educational events that equip our members with the skills and knowledge to understand the systemic nature of racism and take collective action.
Behind-the-scenes roles are here as well - in social media, emails, website, and communications.
We meet quarterly and usually commit to 3-6 hours of work in between (quarterly)!
The Healing Team emphasizes the importance of collective care.
The Healing Team often builds in reflective and rejuvenating exercises and practices to meetings, workshops, and ongoing work.
They also remind us to build community together, step back when we need to take a break, and plan fun events.
Commitment is minimal— light planning for a meeting or workshop, and sharing fun local events with coordinators to communicate to our members.
Our structure is neither hierarchical nor top-down. Even with our three SURJ3A coordinators at the center, their main role is to coordinate decision-making and keep us all connected in this work. They also organize the agenda for our monthly meeting and often have an odd task or two if you want to get a feel for the role!
The coordinator role requires a minimum six-month commitment and typically involves about 1–3 hours per week.
