ORGANIZE IN SOLIDARITY NOT SILOS
Showing Up for Racial Justice in Annapolis & Anne Arundel County (SURJ3A)
is rooted in education, community organizing, and mobilizing.
We are the Annapolis & Anne Arundel County, Maryland chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), a national network of groups and individuals organizing white people for racial and economic justice since 2009.
We use a shared interest approach, emphasizing what white people have to gain by fighting racism and focusing on collective liberation.
SURJ3A members are currently active with:
Calling in white people to the multiracial justice movement
Legislative advocacy that brings about policy changes for racial equity and intersectional justice
Community organizing, mutual aid, and reparative justice action and education
Supporting our Accountability Partners’ capacity and actions
Noncooperation Campaigns – organizing and taking action against ICE and authoritarianism
Election Campaigns – supporting progressive candidates locally and nationally
“When looking for 'my people,' I knew I needed a few things:
People with experience and a track record of putting in the work. Not a group that was just figuring itself out.
A group that was adamantly intersectional, acknowledged systemic racism, and was actively working against the pitfalls of white saviorism.
I found that group in SURJ.”

This SURJ3A Community Calendar includes SURJ3A actions and meetings, and events submitted by our Accountability Partners — Anne Arundel NAACP, Coalition for Atonement & Repair (CAR), CASA, and PeopleBuilders Consulting — as well as members of a multiracial coalition with whom we are collaborating on joint actions.
We focus on mobilizing white people to join the multiracial movement for justice, and we intentionally build relationships with Black- and Brown-led groups and their members. Since our founding, we’ve supported their agendas with our time, talent, treasure, ties, and testimony. These partnerships keep us accountable and ensure we do not operate in isolation or uninformed silos.
Our Story, Our Stake tells the story of SURJ’s work and how we bring white people into movements for justice through engaging their shared interest. All people stand to gain by joining fights for racial and economic justice!
